Young Artist Portfolio & Career Program

Service Description

Designed for young artists who are serious about developing their artwork and want to learn what it takes to begin building a future in the art world. This is an ongoing, individualized program—not a traditional course. Students may join at any time and work at their own pace with guidance from their instructor. Each artist receives a portfolio checklist and works toward their own goals. There is no set completion date; students continue until they feel confident that their portfolio and professional materials are complete. Students will work on developing strong portfolio pieces while also learning the professional side of being an artist, including photographing artwork, creating professional art prints, writing an artist bio and statement, developing an artist brand, pricing artwork, designing business cards, building a website or digital portfolio, preparing for commissions, and learning how to present and talk about their work. As their portfolio develops, students will also learn about opportunities including gallery exhibitions, art markets, juried shows, contests, commissions, scholarships, college art portfolios, and other creative career paths. What's Included: Each student will receive one professionally printed set of business cards as part of the program. Students who would like to expand their artist brand can also create items such as stickers, postcards, additional art prints and other products for an additional cost. Students are encouraged to bring a laptop if they have one, especially while working on websites, digital portfolios, branding and other professional materials. A laptop is recommended but not required. Real Opportunities for Young Artists: This program goes beyond simply creating a portfolio. Students will have opportunities to showcase their artwork inside Summer's Art Studio & Gallery and may have opportunities to participate in art markets, studio events and other exhibitions, giving them real experience presenting their work to the public. Portfolio Scholarship: Every three months, one outstanding portfolio will be selected to receive a Young Artist Portfolio Scholarship. This gives students something meaningful to work toward while recognizing artistic growth, dedication, professionalism and the development of a strong body of work. Start anytime.
